PHOENIX — It turns out players aren’t the only ones who score during a Super Bowl: Glendale homeowners did pretty well for themselves three years ago.
A study from Realtor.com found that home sales prices increased nearly 20 percent near University of Phoenix Stadium in the year after Super Bowl XLIX.
The study said it was one of the largest football-related home sale bumps in the past five years.
The website said there was a 100 percent increase in the number of homes listed near the stadium around Super Bowl time because sellers anticipated a demand increase.
“I had around 10 sellers who wanted to get listed before the Super Bowl, because they knew there was going to be an extraordinary amount of extra exposure,” real estate agent Kristy Ryan told Realtor.com.
And that exposure paid off. Ryan said she sold a $2.8 million home to a New York couple who came to town for the big game.
“They thought, ‘Hey, while we are here, we can look’ and then they fell in love,” she said.
Other cities to benefit from Super Bowl interest were New Orleans and, to a much smaller degree, Santa Clara, California.
But, much like football, there was also some losers. Home prices in both Houston and East Rutherford, New Jersey fell after they hosted the big game.
