PHOENIX — Airport officials expect another busy travel season in 2018 after almost 44 million people passed through Sky Harbor International Airport in 2017.
Julie Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for Sky Harbor International Airport, said passenger counts were up 1.2 percent from 2016 and officials expect this year to be another solid year for travel through the Phoenix area.
“We have strong local demand in the Phoenix market,” Rodriguez said. “That is good for the airport and good for the community. More than half of the passengers who use Sky Harbor either start their trip here or end their trip here.”
Rodriguez said Sky Harbor saw a 1.7 percent spike in the number of passengers in the month of December compared to the same time the previous year.
Travelers should expect Sky Harbor to continue to hum along.
Air Canada is adding a flight to Montreal and Contour Airlines plans to add a flight to Frankfurt, Germany this year.
British Airways will also add flights to London starting this May, Rodriguez said.
The spokeswoman said the airport is also adding domestic routes such as a flight to Amarillo via American Airlines.
Sky Harbor is approaching its busiest travel month — in March — where four million people are expected to travel through Phoenix for events such as the Cactus League and ideal weather.
New restaurants and shops are also expected to be built in Terminals 3 and 4 along with an extension of the Sky Train to the rental car center.
“…We expect to have a very good year this year.”
