PHOENIX — Four people have been detained in connection to a drive-by shooting that killed a teenage boy and critically wounded another in Phoenix on Sunday.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, the shooting took place around 1:30 p.m. in the area of 67th Avenue and Baseline.
Witnesses told police that the two groups were involved in an “illegal drug transaction” when the shots were fired.
The teenagers were the only two injured in the shooting. One of the boys — 14-year-old Jovanny Palayo — died on the scene, while the other, an unidentified 15-year-old, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He is recovering from his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, the four suspects — 18-year-old Robert Wells, a 16-year-old boy and two 15-year-old boys — fled in a vehicle, but were soon stopped by police.
The department said evidence uncovered that the vehicle had been stolen and the suspects were using it to sell drugs to Palayo and the other male victim. Police said Palayo, armed with a stolen handgun, “began to rob Wells of money, property, and drugs,” before Wells shot them and fled the area.
Wells has been booked for second-degree murder, attempt to commit second-degree murder and burglary charges.
The investigation is ongoing.
