PHOENIX — The city of Tempe is hosting another major sporting event.

On Sept. 22, eight teams of four athletes each are taking part in the Major League Triathlon. The event is the third stop on the league’s 2018 nationwide tour.

Tempe’s new league team will play host to the league’s other teams.

“We are thrilled to add Tempe to the league schedule,” Daniel Cassidy, CEO of Major League Triathlon, said. “Tempe has made it very clear that they are committed to being a leader in triathlon and have hosted some of the biggest events in the sport.”

All 32 participating athletes swim three hundred meters, bike four miles and run one mile in downtown Tempe. They will tag their next teammate to complete the same circuit. Once all four athletes on a team cross the finish line, that team wins.

“Securing Major League Triathlon in Tempe in 2018 is a major win for our city,” said Brian McCartin, president and CEO of the Tempe Tourism Office. “Our goal is for Tempe to be known as a destination for triathlons and hosting an event of this caliber will help us achieve this objective.

“We can’t wait to watch these talented athletes cross the finish line.”

In addition to the race itself, Cassidy said, there will be amateur and youth races, as well as a vendor expo, festival and after-party.

Major League Triathlon was formed in 2016 with the goal of creating a more spectator-friendly version of triathlon. Major League Triathlon aims to grow the sport of triathlon on both an amateur and professional level.

Mixed Team Relay has officially been added to the Olympic schedule and will make its debut as a medal event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.
