PHOENIX — Drivers who are hitting the roads in the Phoenix-area this upcoming weekend will most likely find themselves in a bit of a jam — literally.
There are several events in the West Valley over the weekend, including SuperCross at University of Phoenix Stadium and a Brad Paisley concert at Gila River Arena, and the closure of a major freeway will likely cause major delays.
Between the two events, more than 50,000 people are expected to be in the West Valley on Saturday, said Glendale police Sgt. Scott Waite.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the westbound Interstate 10 will be closed from the Interstate 17 “split” and the I-10 “stack,” between Sky Harbor and 19th Avenue. It will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday to 10 p.m. on Saturday for maintenance on the Deck Park Tunnel.
The westbound I-10 will also be closed between 43rd and 59th avenues from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday for South Mountain Freeway construction.
The westbound Loop 202 will be narrowed from one lane between Power and Higley Roads from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Saturday for work zone installation.
The northbound Loop 202 will be narrowed to one lane between Elliot Road and US 60 from 11 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Saturday for pole foundation work.
Doug Nintzel, a spokesman with the agency, said drivers who can avoid these areas should do so at all costs.
“If you can avoid using the westbound I-10 heading into the downtown area, we’d really recommend it,” he said. “It’s going to be slow-and-go for westbound I-10 travel near downtown Phoenix this weekend.”
And for those who are planning on attending events in the West Valley, Nintzel said drivers should think about using the Loop 101 as an alternative route.
“Make your travel plans accordingly.”
