PHOENIX — A 16-year-old volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club in Mesa is facing one count of sexual abuse after allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a 12-year-old girl at the facility.
According to Det. Nik Rasheta with the Mesa Police Department, the incident was uncovered after detectives found evidence of “sexual contact” on the victim’s cell phone.
“It was some form of consensual relationship, according to [the victim], and she disclosed having some sexual contact with the boy at the Boys and Girls Club,” he said.
The unidentified volunteer has since been referred to the juvenile courts for one count of sexual abuse, Rasheta said.
Rasheta said police believe this is an isolated incident, as no other assaults have yet been reported.
