PHOENIX — Several mayors from cities across Arizona met with President Donald Trump as part of the three-day U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.
Mesa Mayor John Giles, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers and Yuma Mayor Douglas Nichols met with the president on Wednesday to talk about the opioid crisis, the economy and infrastructure.

During the meeting, Trump said he would announce a $1.7 trillion infrastructure investment during his State of the Union address next week. He said details of the plan would be laid out soon after the speech.
“We’re also working to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure by stimulating a $1 trillion investment, and that will actually, probably, end up being about $1.7 trillion,” Trump said.
It was my great honor to welcome Mayor’s from across America to the WH. My Administration will always support local government – and listen to the leaders who know their communities best. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell also took part in the U.S. Conference of Mayors, but were not present for the meeting with Trump.
The conference kicked off on Wednesday and will continue through Friday with a whole host of conferences and luncheons.
Giles moderated a panel called “Homelessness: Strategies that Work in Reducing Chronic and Veteran Homelessness” on Wednesday.
On Thursday, both Stanton and Giles will take part in two separate panels: Stanton in “Climate Change: Today’s Leadership Confronting Tomorrow’s Challenges” and Giles in “2020 Census: What Must be Done to Prepare for the Next Census.”
But they won’t be the only Arizona officials who will get in on the fun: U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) will speak at a luncheon to present awards for childhood obesity prevention on Thursday.
More than 200 mayors will participate in the three-day conference.
