Phoenix-area programs awarded $26 million to give shelter to homeless

PHOENIX — Homeless service providers in the Phoenix-area have been awarded $26 million for programs that offer housing to individuals and families in need.
Thirty-seven of the 41 local programs that are being funded will provide a variety of housing options for the Valley’s homeless population.

Anne Scott with the Maricopa Association of Governments said the programs will range from short-term assistance for people who are down on their luck to permanent support for those suffering from chronic homelessness and disabilities.
The rest of the money, Scott said, will go toward the department’s homelessness management information system, which is a database that tracks homelessness and determines people’s needs.
The money will also be used to start a bridge housing program for victims of domestic violence. The program will allow victims to have shelter immediately after leaving their situation while they look for a more permanent solution.
