PHOENIX — Law enforcement will be cracking down on people who drink too much and drive over the coming weekends as some of the biggest annual events in the Phoenix area will be held.
The Scottsdale Police Department said it — along with its counterparts from Tempe, Chandler, Mesa and Maricopa County — was planning to put DUI task forces on the roads for both the Barrett-Jackson auto auction and the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
“The goal of the officers assigned to the task force is to contact those drivers that have made the disastrous decision to drive impaired and remove them from the roadway before they hurt themselves or others,” Scottsdale Sgt. Ben Hoster said in a release.
The auction will wrap up this Sunday, while the golf tournament was scheduled to be held Jan. 31 to Feb. 3. The latter is also the same weekend the Super Bowl will be played.
The auction is being held at Westworld of Scottsdale, near the Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and the tournament will be played at the nearby TPC Scottsdale golf course.
Hoster said officers will be present at both events to remind people to not get behind the wheel if they’re impaired. They will encourage intoxicated attendees to find a better way home that does not involve driving.
