PHOENIX — Phoenix residents who want to give the city their input on the latest Valley Metro light rail expansion can do so during a series of meetings this week.

Valley Metro will be holding two meetings to inform the public on its South Central Extension for the light rail.

The meetings will be held on Wednesday at the South Mountain Community Center in Phoenix and on Thursday at the Lowell Elementary School in Phoenix.

According to Corinne Holliday, a Valley Metro spokeswoman, these meetings will provide the community with an opportunity to talk with department and City of Phoenix leaders about how the expansion can be improved.

“We’re asking the public to come out, learn more about the project and provide input,” she said. “Input is crucial.”

Holliday said officials are asking for feedback on the various design elements, including track design and landscaping.

The project is currently in its design phase and Holliday said they will finalize those plans with the community input, while considering the technical and safety elements.

Holliday said the meetings will be open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. Those who are unable to attend either meeting but would still like to provide input can do so online.

The design phase is expected to last about two years and will kick start a larger $704 million project that will extend the light rail from Central Avenue and Jefferson Street several miles south to Baseline Road.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
