PHOENIX — It’s a day to honor the blue, and tan, and green — or whatever color your local law enforcement wears.

Concerns of Police Survivors, otherwise known as C.O.P.S., is promoting Tuesday as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Arizona chapter president Marie Dryer said the significance of the day is “to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the difficult and sometimes impossible career they have chosen, in public service to us all.”

Dryer said some things you can do to appreciate your local officers are wear blue clothing, send a card or letter of support to your local police department or state agency, share a story about a positive law enforcement experience on social media, organize an event or rally, advertise your support through local media or thank an officer.

Residents can also participate in Project Blue Light by putting a blue light bulb in their window or porch light.

From 2016 to 2017, according to Dryer, Arizona lost five law enforcement officers.

Each year nationwide, an average of 203 officers die in the line of duty, 50,000 officers are assaulted in the line of duty, 14,000 are injured in the line of duty and more than 300 officers commit suicide.

We want to hear from you.
