PHOENIX — The smell alone would have been hard to miss. A drug-sniffing dog on duty at the Arizona-Mexico border caught wind of marijuana in a recreational vehicle, leading officers to a million-dollar bust.
Customs and Border Protection agents arrested the driver, a 55-year-old Phoenix man, at the Lukeville Port of Entry in southern Arizona over the weekend, they said Wednesday.
The motorhome had been packed with over a ton of marijuana — close to 2,448 pounds — worth $1,224,000. It was the second-biggest marijuana seizure in the port’s history. Lukeville port opened in 1941.
A statement from the agency said the 120 bundles were pulled from storage compartments, walls, and the floor of the RV on Saturday afternoon.
The driver was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
Lukeville is 117 miles south of Phoenix and 113 miles west of Tucson.
