PHOENIX – State parks across Arizona are offering residents and visitors a chance to get a healthy start to the New Year.

They’re hosting nearly 40 activities on Monday. The activities range from hikes and guided tours to boat rides and nature walks.

Sue Black, executive director of Arizona State Parks and Trails, said this is part of the national First Day Hikes, an effort to kick off 2018 on a healthy note.

Other parts of the country are hosting similar activities at their state parks.

“I think it’s a really fun, healthy way to start off the New Year with your friends and family,” Black said.

For people staying in the Valley, the Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction is offering two hikes. The Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park in Superior has few events planned, including a bird walk and a guided tour.

In Cottonwood, the Dead Horse Ranch State Park is offering a guided three-mile birding and nature hike.

The Patagonia Lake State Park has two boat tours planned. And in Sedona, there will be a guided nature hike at the Red Rock State Park and a history tour at Slide Rock State Park.

“There’s something for everyone statewide,” Black said.

She said make sure to wear the right gear for each activity. Most will require closed-toe shoes, water and a hat.

For a full list of activities happening Monday, visit the Arizona State Parks and Trails website.

We want to hear from you.
