PHOENIX — The Valley Metro rail system has officially been in place for a decade and in honor of this milestone, officials will be holding special events throughout 2018.
According to Susan Tierney with Valley Metro, riders should stay tuned and look out for different events throughout 2018 to celebrate its milestone of 10 years of service in the Valley.
Tierney said the rail service was first implemented on Dec. 27, 2008, when it extended 20 miles across the Valley.
But within the next couple of decades, Tierney said the department plans to extend the service by 40 more miles, including to south central Phoenix and northwest Phoenix, further into Mesa to Gilbert Road and adding onto the Tempe streetcar.
Tierney said the rail service has become an integral part of the Valley’s transportation system, servicing more than 50,000 passengers per day, connecting and enhancing communities and allowing residents to get to their jobs, entertainment areas and school.
“It’s exciting to be a part of communities in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa,” she said. “There are a lot of exciting things in store for Valley residents over the next 20 to 30 years.”
