PHOENIX — A 69-year-old woman has died after being apparently mauled by a dog while volunteering at a pet boarding service in Phoenix.
According to Sgt. Jonathan Howard with the Phoenix Police Department, the woman, identified later as Carol Harris, died of her injuries on Wednesday.
Her injuries were consistent with dog bites, he added.
Howard said Harris was a volunteer with the Canine Country Club and Feline Inn. The woman was reportedly walking a dog in the exercise area when she received her injuries.
Harris seemingly had experience in this area prior to Wednesday’s attack, Howard said, but added that he was not sure of the dog’s history.
“It’s a horrible tragedy, especially at this time of year.”
Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spokesman Jose Santiago said the 6-year-old male Akita will be euthanized and then tested for rabies.
