PHOENIX — A Tempe relic is about to get a jolt of new life as plans progress for new restaurants and a hotel at the Hayden Flour Mill.
The flour mill, located at Rio Salado and Mill Avenue, is getting a makeover complete with a full-service hotel and new restaurants in an area that was recently voted one of the hottest commercial intersections by Urban Land Institute.
“The Hayden Flour Mill is one of Tempe’s most recognized and beloved buildings,” Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell told AZ Big Media. “The jobs, restaurants and businesses that will come with that redevelopment illustrates how projects and buildings come full circle.”
The makeover will transform the mill and silo buildings into a commercial mixed-use complex, according to the publication.
The hotel is expected to have 165 guestrooms and suites along with a 30,000-square-foot boutique retail and office space.
The Hayden Flour Mill was once an agricultural hub for grain, cotton and dairy products. The mill was constructed in 1918 and used most of the grain grown in Arizona during that time period.
The current mill was one built after a fire destroyed the original structure, which was built before business operations began around 1874.
A project completion date is not yet known.
