Ugly Christmas sweaters have become as much of a Christmas tradition as eggnog and mistletoe.
You can find dozens if not hundreds of Christmas sweaters for sale on sites like Amazon. But how did this trend start?
According to Complex, it began in the 1950s when clothing known as “Jingle Bell Sweaters” were introduced. As Christmas was becoming more commercial, these sweaters pioneered the ugly Christmas sweater.
Fast forward to the 1980s. According to ThoughtCo, Bill Cosby helped popularize the ugly sweater on “The Cosby Show.” In addition, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and the Griswold family helped contribute to the ugly sweater’s fame.
According to Time, the ugly sweater’s prevalence faded in the 1990s. However, it has been making a comeback.
Based on data gathered from Google Trends, the number of searches for ugly sweaters has exploded since 2014.
