Arizona campaign will attempt to curb number of wrong-way drivers

Dec 14, 2017, 2:24 PM

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation has launched a new campaign called “Drive Aware, Get There,” designed to prepare motorists for potential wrong-way drivers.

This new campaign has been approved by Gov. Doug Ducey, the Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

ADOT has launched a website and YouTube videos in both English and Spanish to spread the word.

“This public awareness effort will provide drivers with information to increase their safety when driving at night and understand what to do in the event of an encounter with a wrong-way driver,” Ducey said.

If drivers are notified of a wrong-way driver, they can exit the freeway, call 911 if they spot the person and leave enough space for others to get out of the way.

ADOT said motorists should be aware that wrong-way drivers tend to use the left or HOV lanes.

It is no secret that Gov. Ducey has wanted to put an end to the wrong-way driving problem that has plagued the state over the years.

The state began construction on a wrong-way driver detection system that uses a never-before-tried thermal detection system in November.

The campaign was also designed to bring awareness to the dangers of driving at night.

We want to hear from you.
