PHOENIX — Desert Schools Federal Credit Union is no more.
Well, at least not in name.
The credit union announced Monday that it would change its name to Desert Financial because more than half of Valley residents thought it was only open to educators.
“We have served people from all professions for almost 20 years,” CEO Jeff Meshey said. “Some people even think we’re a school.
“… We’re just replacing ‘schools’ with a word that better represents who we are as a financial institution.”
In its announcement, Desert Financial said the name change would become official on Jan. 1.
“We believe that this change will create an opportunity for growth for our credit union,” Meshey said. “Because of this growth, we’ll be able to expand our community giving, advance our existing technology offerings and increase the benefits available to you.”
The credit union said nothing else about it would be different. Customers will not have to change their “online banking login, checks, cards, direct deposits, account numbers, payments or anything else.”
The credit union also said that it was not being bought out and was not eliminating any of the services it offered.
Desert Financial was chosen from a list of hundreds of names by members, possible members, focus groups and market research.
“We know that this name is the right name for us,” Meshey said.
The credit union has about 50 locations in Arizona.
