ADOT aims to curb speeding with new signs on I-17 in north Phoenix

PHOENIX — Traveling up north for the holidays?
If so, you might see new Arizona Department of Transportation signs that will aim to curb speeding on Interstate 17 in the Black Canyon City area.
According to a press release, ADOT added speed-feedback signs to help deter motorists from traveling over the speed limit. The new signs show the posted speed limit along with a digital display that shows the speed of the vehicle.
The six signs are a part of a $1.1 million safety project and have been installed between Black Canyon City and the Sunset Point rest area.
If a particular vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, the signs will light up with messages such as “Too Fast” and “Slow Down” for drivers to see.
The speed limits along I-17 north of Phoenix range from 65 to 75 mph.
ADOT officials installed the signs after a traffic study found that drivers in the area were most often cited for “speed too fast for conditions.”
That violation resulted in more than 40 percent of crashes between 2011 and 2015.
Officials hope the signs can serve as a safety tool and possibly help prevent crashes by making drivers more aware of their speeding habits.
