PHOENIX — The Border Patrol posted billboards in several southern states, including Arizona, on Friday in hopes someone would have information about the death of one of its agents.

The billboards advertised a $45,000 reward for information about the death of Rogelio Martinez and injuries suffered by another agent on Nov. 18 in Van Horn, Texas.

The Border Patrol was uncertain what happened to the agents, both of whom suffered traumatic head injuries and broken bones.

President Donald Trump tweeted about the issue and said the United States must build a border wall, possibly hinting that the agents were assaulted by someone crossing the border.

However, there was no evidence the agents were attacked. Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, whose agency was assisting with the investigation, told the Dallas Morning News that the agents may have fallen into a ravine.

“The injuries to [Martinez], after talking to his doctors, were consistent with a fall. Very consistent with a fall,” the sheriff said. “Why is the other guy hurt? That’s the unknown. What happened to him?”

Carrillo also said it was possible the agents were hit by a passing truck.

Anyone who has any information was asked to contact the FBI at 800-CALLFBI. Information can also be submitted online.

We want to hear from you.
