PHOENIX — Have an idea for a pretty or eye-catching bike rack design in downtown Phoenix? You could win $4,000 for it.

Downtown Phoenix Inc. partnered with Artlink, Phoenix’s transportation department and the city’s Office of Arts and Culture to invite artists and designers of all practices to apply for Pedal to the Metal: Phoenix Bike Rack Project.

R.J. Price with Downtown Phoenix Inc. said four finalists would be chosen, each of whom would receive $250. The two winners would get $4,000 each.

“With so many people moving downtown, a lot of those people don’t have cars. A lot of those people are riding their bikes,” Price said.

Dan Klocke, the executive director with Downtown Phoenix Inc., said the initiative will “have a tangible impact on how our streets look and feel.”

“The best streets are user-friendly, yes, but should also be interesting and representative of the neighborhoods in which they’re located,” he said.

Price said all artists are welcome to apply, whether they are professionals and no matter what medium they work in.

The project includes a workshop on Dec. 6 that will cover how to prepare ideas for submission. It will be located at Downtown Phoenix Inc.’s headquarters at 1 E. Washington Street.

All submissions are due by Dec. 18.

We want to hear from you.
