PHOENIX — Authorities shut down part of Interstate 10 west of Phoenix early Tuesday to investigate a shooting between state troopers and an armed suspect at a rest stop.
Law enforcement officials said Sladjan Petkovic, 36, was seriously injured during the gunfire and was airlifted to a hospital, where he was in custody.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the gunfire began when Petkovic in a rest area shot at a trooper who earlier came upon a trucker who had suffered minor injuries when shots were fired at his big rig.
DPS Capt. Tony Mapp said it was not immediately known whether officers’ gunfire injured the suspect or whether he shot himself.
No officers were injured.
Westbound lanes were closed for hours from milepost 81 to milepost 45.
Petkovic was wanted as a suspect in the fatal Monday shooting of 45-year-old Steven Arvallo.
Several agencies worked to apprehend Petkovic.
