Food website ranks Phoenix pizzeria among best in the nation

PHOENIX — The Valley is known for some great eateries and some great grub no matter what you favor.

But is pizza inching its way to the forefront?

One website, tastingtable.com, thinks so.

The website included a local pizzeria on its list one of the best pizzerias in the country.

Pizzeria Bianco, which has three Phoenix locations, started about 30 years ago at a local grocery store in Phoenix.

Don’t think of Phoenix when you think of best cities for pizzaThink again. And the place leading the charge for that title is Pizzeria Bianco, a wood-fired pizzeria in an old machine shop in downtown Phoenix that under Bronx-born chef Chris Bianco was the first pizza parlor to win a regional James Beard Award back in 2003.

Grab a seat out front underneath the twinkling patio lights and order the Rosa, which gets you red onion, Parmigiano-Reggiano, rosemary and Arizona-grown pistachios all on top of that signature crispy-thin crust. Pro tip: Lines form quickly at this institution (and get long fast), so get there well before doors open.

In July, Bianco was featured on a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his book. In the segment, Bianco showed Kimmel and actor Billy Crystal how to make mozzarella and tomato paste.

As Kimmel stretched the cheese curd, Kimmel asked, “Am I doing this right, Chris?,” Kimmel asked. “You are doing it right, you are doing it right,” Bianco quickly responded. “Yeah, you are doing it pretty good,” Bianco said with doubt in his voice.

The book, “Bianco: Pizza, Pasta and Other Food I Like” came out in July and is now available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and at Changing Hands Bookstore.

The restaurant locations include one near 7th and Adams streets, a location near 22nd Street and Camelback Road and one on Central and Turney avenues.

We want to hear from you.
