PHOENIX — Banner Health could be adding a new cancer center to its facility near downtown Phoenix, documents posted online showed.
The documents were mailed to residents who live near the University Medical Center-Phoenix facility at 12th Street and McDowell Road by HKS Architects, an architectural firm. They were posted in a closed Facebook group and obtained by KTAR News.
The firm — which has worked on several of Banner’s projects on the same site — wanted to inform residents it was seeking code changes, including a height exception, for the proposed center.
According to a letter sent to residents, the 56-foot-tall center would be built in space occupied by two medical office buildings and a parking lot that runs along McDowell Road.
In an email, Banner said it was always looking for ways to better serve its patients, but would not confirm the center was being built.
“We are considering expansion of our cancer services in downtown Phoenix, but no final decisions have been made at this time,” spokeswoman Becky Armendariz said.
In the letter, HKS Architects said it had submitted an application to make the code changes. However, its case was not listed on the city’s planning committee website.
