PHOENIX — Four people were injured, including three children, after a city of Tempe garbage truck crashed into two active vehicles and two parked cars in Phoenix on Monday, police said.
The five-vehicle collision occurred near Seventh Street and Broadway Road around 3:15 p.m., according to Sgt. Vince Lewis.
Lewis said the crash happened when the garbage truck initially collided with a Volkswagen Passat as the vehicle waited in the intersection to turn left.
The garbage truck then crashed into a second vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, in the intersection before crashing into two parked cars.
According to the department, an 11-month old female, a 7-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were all transported to local hospitals as trauma patients.
The other victim was a 30-year-old woman, who was driving the SUV when the collision occurred. The woman was also transported to a local trauma facility.
All of the victims were in the Jeep Cherokee and all had varying levels of severity, Lewis said, but are all expected to survive their injuries.
The driver of the sanitation vehicle was not taken to a local hospital. Lewis said the driver did not show any signs of impairment.
The intersection will remain closed during the evening rush hour on Monday, Lewis said.
