Arizona State University alum wins teacher of the year award

PHOENIX– Josh Meibos values advice and experience others have offered him over the years.
Now, it’s his work for others that is gaining him praise as Meibos was named this year’s Arizona Teacher of the Year from the Arizona Educational Foundation.
Meibos, an alumnus of Arizona State University, is a physical education teacher at Crockett Elementary School in Phoenix. He was chosen for his active role in the community while helping bring together students, parents and co-workers.
“I get to be a positive role model, sometimes the only male role model a student interacts with,” Meibos told ASU Now. “I just use one of our students’ favorite subjects, physical education, and teach kindness and respect for themselves and each other.”
The Phoenix teacher holds a master’s degree from Arizona State’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and has taught for seven years.
He said the mentorship program at Arizona State helped him build lasting relationships with people that share his passion.
“I think that’s something very powerful,” Meibos said. “It’s something you can take away from the college for the rest of your life.”
Meibos was awarded a $15,000 cash prize and a trip to the White House as part of an education advocacy program. He is in the running for the National Teacher of the Year Award.
