PHOENIX — Up-and-coming rapper Lil Peep died suddenly Wednesday night before a scheduled concert in Tucson.

Gustav Ahr, 21, was aboard a tour bus waiting for showtime at the Rock, a music venue on Park Avenue near Broadway Boulevard. Britain’s Guardian said one of his managers had said the rapper had been hospitalized after an overdose.

KVOA-TV said police acknowledged officers had been on a bus that was the site of an overdose, but wouldn’t identify who was involved.

Billboard posted a tweet with explicit language from another of the YouTube star’s managers that said he had been “expecting this call for year.”

In a post to his Instagram account uploaded the day of the Tucson show, the emo rapper cryptically wrote, “When I die You’ll love me.”

The New Yorker sang and talked about his depression, anxiety and drug use and had released his debut album, “Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One),” in August. In a recent interview, he said the anxiety was getting worse.

In another Instagram post, this one a video addressing fans in El Paso, Texas where he was to play Tuesday night, Peep said he had taken a half-dozen prescription pills but that he was “fine.”

Sarah Stennett, co-founder of First Access Entertainment, an entertainment company that worked with Peep, tweeted out a response to the news:

Peep’s music videos had racked up more than 12 million views on YouTube.

We want to hear from you.
