PHOENIX — Up-and-coming rapper Lil Peep died suddenly Wednesday night before a scheduled concert in Tucson.
Gustav Ahr, 21, was aboard a tour bus waiting for showtime at the Rock, a music venue on Park Avenue near Broadway Boulevard. Britain’s Guardian said one of his managers had said the rapper had been hospitalized after an overdose.
KVOA-TV said police acknowledged officers had been on a bus that was the site of an overdose, but wouldn’t identify who was involved.
Billboard posted a tweet with explicit language from another of the YouTube star’s managers that said he had been “expecting this call for year.”
In a post to his Instagram account uploaded the day of the Tucson show, the emo rapper cryptically wrote, “When I die You’ll love me.”
The New Yorker sang and talked about his depression, anxiety and drug use and had released his debut album, “Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One),” in August. In a recent interview, he said the anxiety was getting worse.
