PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer who was injured in an off-duty car accident is turning to the public for help.

Ofc. Stephen Outram, a 17-year veteran with the department, was badly injured when he, his wife and their two daughters were involved in a three-vehicle car accident last month.

The family was heading on vacation when their vehicle was slammed twice near Chandler: Once head-on and once in the rear.

Ken Crane with the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association said Outram’s wife and daughters were badly hurt, but he sustained the worst injuries because his side of the vehicle took the brunt of the impact.

Crane said Outram had to have his left arm amputated below the shoulder and had his entire left leg amputated. In addition, he is still battling several bacterial and fungal infections.

In order to help offset some of the medical costs, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is holding a fundraising cookout at the PLEA Garage Grill from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday to raise money for Outram and his family.

“Clearly his law enforcement career is over,” Crane said. “When you’re talking about injuries of that nature, you might have to have modified vehicles, wheelchairs, you might have to have modifications made to your dwelling.”

Crane said cash and credit cards will be accepted at the cookout. For those who will not be able to make it to the event, the association will also accept donations by phone or online through Nov. 22.

“Any little thing helps – every little thing adds up,” Crane said.

We want to hear from you.
