Weekly wrap-up: Here are some of the biggest stories of Nov. 5 week

PHOENIX — It’s Sunday, otherwise known as the day when one week starts to wind down in preparation for a new one.

And this past week has been a doozy, to say the least.

Between the Texas church shooting that occurred exactly one week ago today, multiple sexual assault allegations lobbied against local politicians and national stars and the Veterans Day holiday, this past week has been buzzing with news.

Here is a recap of some of the major events that happened over the past week, both in Arizona and across the nation.

At least 26 killed after gunman opens fire in southern Texas church

At least 26 people were killed and about 20 more were injured after a gunman opened fire during a church service in a southern Texas city last Sunday.

Devin Patrick Kelley, a 26-year-old man from New Braunfels, Texas, walked into First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and started walking up and down the aisles and shooting victims in between pews.

The victims ranged in age from 18 months to 77 years old. Kelley was found dead in his vehicle after he fled the scene and was chased by two witnesses.

The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in Texas’s history, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.

After the shooting, it was revealed that Kelley was sentenced to a year in prison and was kicked out of the Air Force with a bad conduct discharge after he was found guilty of abusing his wife and stepchild in 2014.

He did not have a license to carry a gun and the Air Force failed to inform the FBI of his criminal history, which would have made it more difficult for him to obtain a weapon.

In response, Sen. John McCain and Rep. Ruben Gallego vowed to investigate the systematic failures that allowed Kelley to legally purchase a weapon.

Sen. Jeff Flake also co-sponsored a bill that would ban the sale of firearms to people who have been convicted of domestic violence crimes.

Ex-‘House of Cards’ star Kevin Spacey checks into Arizona rehab

Kevin Spacey, the former star of the Netflix hit series “House of Cards,” reportedly checked himself into The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona, for rehabilitation, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

The move comes after multiple people accused Spacey of inappropriate behavior, from harassment on the set of “House of Cards” to sexual assault.

In a statement to the publication, the actor’s representatives said Spacey is “taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment.”

Waymo to start testing driverless cars in Phoenix area

Waymo announced Tuesday that it will soon start test-driving cars without someone in the driver’s seat in the Phoenix area.

“We are confident that our cars are reliable and ready to start test-driving without a test driver in the driver’s seat,” Waymo CEO John Krafcik said in a release.

Waymo has been testing self-driving cars in Phoenix and other cities for at least a year, but there was always someone in the driver’s seat, just in case. The latest round of tests moves that person to the back seat.

Rep. Martha McSally reportedly tells colleagues she’s entering Arizona Senate race

U.S. Rep. Martha McSally has reportedly told her colleagues she’s planning to toss her hat into the ring for Sen. Jeff Flake’s seat in next year’s election, it was announced Tuesday.

McSally hasn’t made a formal announcement of her intention to run in next year’s Republican primary. But Arizona Rep. David Schweikert told the Associated Press that she had told fellow Arizona GOP members of Congress that she was running.

McSally would face off against former state Sen. Kelli Ward, who challenged U.S. Sen. John McCain last year but lost in the primary.

Arizona lawmaker accuses colleague of sexual harassment

State Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita publicly accused one of her colleagues on Tuesday of sexually harassing her for years despite her requests for him to stop.

Ugenti-Rita said state Rep. Don Shooter has harassed her since she arrived in the Legislature in 2011 and others may have done the same.

In response, three other state lawmakers — Reps. Kelly Townsend, Athena Salman and Wenona Benally — went public with their stories of harassment or inappropriate behavior at the state Legislature.

Shooter has since been suspended from his role as chairman of the appropriations committee and The Arizona Chamber of Commerce called on him to resign.

Officials say Glendale teacher was stabbed, beaten to death

A Glendale teacher whose body was found in northern Arizona last month was stabbed and beaten to death, officials said Wednesday.

The Yavapai County Medical Examiner’s Office said Cathryn Gorospe was killed by a combination of stab wounds and blunt force injuries to the chest.

Gorospe went missing in Flagstaff after bailing out 27-year-old Charlie Malzahn in early October. A bail bondsman said he warned Gorospe against bailing Malzahn out.

Her body was found more than two weeks later near Mayer, nearly 90 miles away from where she was last seen.

McCain, Flake call on Moore to drop Senate bid after sex conduct claims

Both of Arizona’s senators said Thursday that Roy Moore, who is running for an Alabama Senate seat left vacant by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, should bow out after it was alleged he had sexual contact with a teenager years ago.

The Washington Post reported Moore, then a 32-year-old assistant district attorney, had inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old girl at least once in 1979.

McCain called the allegations “deeply disturbing and disqualifying” in a two-sentence statement. Flake echoed McCain’s statement, saying Moore should likely remove himself from the race if the allegations are true.

Multiple women accuse comedian Louis CK of sexual misconduct

Comedian Louis C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct toward several women, including masturbating in front of them to their horror and embarrassment, according to a report in The New York Times on Thursday.

Five women — including comedians Dana Min Goodman, Abby Schachner, Julia Wolov, Rebecca Corry — allege the Emmy-winning star of FX’s “Louie” either pleasured himself in front of them, asked to do it or did so over the phone.

A fifth woman detailed her allegations against C.K. to the paper but was not identified.

C.K. said in a statement on Friday that the “stories are true” but that he is “remorseful of my actions.”

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords suing Trump, feds over NRA documents

An organization headed by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) sued the Trump administration Thursday in an effort to see any communications between officials and the National Rifle Association.

The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence filed suit against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for failing to turn over documents relating to those types of communications.

The group said those documents could show the NRA’s influence over President Donald Trump’s gun policies, but said all of their requests were ignored, the lawsuit alleged.

ASU professor resigns after being outed as sexually abusive priest

An Arizona State University professor resigned after it was revealed Friday that his priesthood was revoked by the Roman Catholic Church for sexually abusing children.

Research professor James “Jaime” Lara was asked to resign after the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn released a statement about Lara’s past.

The church said Lara was ordained in 1973. His priesthood was revoked in 1992 by the Vatican after the church learned he had sexually abused children.
