PHOENIX — U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) is itching to run — literally.

The fitness fan, who recently got a soft cast removed from a leg, is running a half-marathon Saturday in Peoria to benefit veterans and their families, she told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Thursday.

Sinema was scheduled to kick off the Rally Point race and 5K on Veterans Day.

“I am very excited about Saturday,” Sinema said.

The congresswoman had been in a soft walking cast for nine weeks. She also had been on crutches.

“I am going to run,” she said.

The race, held at Peoria Sports Complex, will begin with a moment of silence in honor of all veterans.

“This is something that is very personal for me,” she said.

The Tucson native’s older brother served with the Marines and a younger brother is a Navy gunner’s mate. One of her grandfathers served during World War II.

Sinema also launched another veterans program Thursday, Salute to Service.

“Staffers taking veterans to Sirrine Elementary School in Chandler. The kids are so excited … they’re overwhelmed to meet these veterans. I’m sad I can’t be there,” Sinema said.

The former state senator and representative has another race on her mind, too — the 2018 Senate race to replace retiring Republican Jeff Flake.

“When we announced this campaign, we knew it would be a robust race. It’s been really exciting.”

She jumped into the race in September, a handful of months after saying she would run for re-election.

“This is such an important race for Arizonans. I’m not interested in partisan politics, I’m just interested in getting things done.”

We want to hear from you.
