LISTEN: Congressman Andy Biggs

PHOENIX — Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs said it was too early for his colleagues to hit the panic button after Democrats won big in Tuesday’s elections.

The Democrats won the governorships of both New Jersey and Virginia, along with seats in state legislatures, but Biggs said the shift came too early to cause the GOP concern.

“I think it’s too much too soon,” he told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Wednesday. “I think we expected the Virginia governorship to go Democrat. They’ve been consistently Democrat for a long time.”

Biggs said the minority party picking up a few seats here and there should be anticipated in an off-year election, but people need to keep things in perspective.

“I think people aren’t remembering that, in Utah, the Republicans kept the seat of Jason Chaffetz, so there’s offsets throughout the night,” he said.

However, Biggs said it wouldn’t hurt his party to step back and take a look at what happened Tuesday as it readies for next year’s midterm elections that will see one of Arizona’s Senate seats come available.

“I think it’s worth looking, worth assessing and seeing where we are, but I don’t think it’s any reason to panic,” he said.
