PHOENIX — Nearly 400 people will be laid off from UnitedHealthcare in Phoenix this week, according to a company spokesperson.
The company said Wednesday that 381 positions from the military and veterans division will be eliminated starting on Thursday. The employees will be able to work until Jan. 2, the spokesperson said.
The positions all support the TriCare West Region contract, which was ended by the Department of Defense in May in an effort to transform the military’s health care system.
The contract will end on Dec. 31, before the transition goes into effect on Jan. 1.
The company spokesperson said many of the employees who are expected to lose their positions are already placed in other areas and UnitedHealthcare is helping the other employees transition into new jobs.
In a statement, Vice President of Communications Bruce Jasurda said the company “remains committed to having a substantial presence through our other services in the state of Arizona.”
