PHOENIX — A tour company that specializes in Native American culture and history has officially opened its doors in Phoenix.
Detours Native America will look to educate travelers on Native American life through unique experiences.
“What Detours Native America is an insight and perspective through travel and tourism looking through all the West Coast through the Native American eye,” owner Donovan Hanley said.
The small group trips — scheduled to begin next year — will offer people exclusive access to dozens of tribes.
“I personally designed these tours to ensure an unparalleled look into native life,” Hanley, an Arizona native who grew up near White Cone on the Navajo Nation, said.
Hanley said the trips will encourage Native Americans to talk with travelers and share their stories.
“Getting them to tell their story, their travel story, and letting them speak to that or how have they contributed to historical marks, like when the west was won,” Hanley said. “We have a version of how the west was lost.”
The company was offering several trips. Some of them focused on visiting different Arizona tribes, while others included landmarks and festivals throughout the state.
No specific itineraries were available as of Tuesday.
