Two students found exchanging handgun on Mesa high school campus

PHOENIX — Two students from Red Mountain High School in Mesa could face legal trouble after a handgun was found on campus Tuesday, officials said.
According to Helen Hollands, a spokeswoman with Mesa Public Schools, a .9 mm handgun was found in a student’s backpack.
School officials conducted an investigation and found that two students were involved in the exchange or purchase of the handgun and two rounds of ammunition.
The students will face discipline in school and “legal ramifications” for their actions and will be “held accountable to the highest extent possible,” Hollands said.
The incident came one day after a threat was made against the school on social media. Officials with the Mesa Police Department said the threat was “not viable.”
School officials do not believe the two events were linked.
