PHOENIX — The last time we checked it was fall in Arizona, but Phoenix must have missed the memo: The city set a new heat record on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said the mercury topped out at 99 degrees, three degrees hotter than the old record set in 2014.

The record was officially broken about 12:30 p.m., but it continued to get a few degrees hotter.

The weather service said people should take some simple precautions to protect themselves in the record temperatures.

Things were expected to begin cooling off after Tuesday.

Wednesday’s high was forecast to be 93 degrees, while Thursday, Friday and Saturday should be about one degree cooler.

Sunday’s high was expected to be 91 degrees and Monday should be 89 degrees.

But that’s not a guarantee the heat has left the Valley for the season, so don’t go pulling out the scarves and mittens quite yet.

Last year, triple-digit highs stuck around until Oct. 27, the latest day in the city’s history to see a temperature of 100 degrees or hotter.

We want to hear from you.
