PHOENIX — Police were searching for a man who was suspected of shooting another man inside of a popular nightclub in Scottsdale early Sunday morning.

The Scottsdale Police Department said the two men were involved in some sort of altercation inside Maya Day and Night Club, located near Camelback and Scottsdale roads in the Old Town district, about 1:40 a.m.

“What’s concerning for us in this one is obviously it’s a crowded building,” officer Kevin Watts said.

Police said the suspect allegedly shot the man once before disappearing into the crowd rushing to leave the club after the gunfire.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He was expected to make a full recovery.

Watts said the city’s nightclubs make their own rules when it comes to allowing weapons, though a majority do not permit them inside.

“Most liquor establishments do not allow you to have weapons inside the club and different clubs do different things at different times in an effort to reduce the likelihood [of a shooting],” he said. “It’s up to the club.”

The suspect was described as being a black male who stood about 6-foot-2 with a medium build. He had medium to long dreadlocks and was possibly wearing a red shirt with white pants.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact police at 480-312-5000.
