PHOENIX — Kasih, an 11-year-old Bornean orangutan at the Phoenix Zoo, died last weekend after a brief illness, the animal park announced.
Medical tests performed Thursday revealed the orangutan had a large brain mass. Treatment had barely begun before she died Saturday, the zoo posted on its website.
She had been exhibiting symptoms of neurological disorder for two weeks.
The statement said Kasih was rambunctious but easy to train and a fast learner. She enjoyed wrestling with her 3-year-old brother, Jiwa.
“Kasih always held a special place in her keepers’ hearts, and always will. She will be missed not only by her keepers, both past and present, but by all the Zoo’s staff, volunteers and by our Zoo guests and friends,” the zoo wrote.
Her parents, Bess and Michael, also live at the exhibit.
