PHOENIX — Two Phoenix suburbs have been ranked among some of the nation’s best cities in which to raise a family.
Financial website WalletHub said Scottsdale came in at No. 20 on the overall list, while Gilbert was just three spots behind.
“[Scottsdale] did really well in terms of affordability. The divorce rate is one of the lowest in the country,” spokeswoman Jill Gonzales said.
To determine where each city fell on the list, WalletHub looked at several factors.
“Overall health and safety, education and childcare; we also looked at affordability and social economics,” Gonzales said.
Both Scottsdale and Gilbert fared very well when it came to the economic side of things.
“The median family annual income is pretty high (in both cities),” Gonzales said. “Scottsdale has the highest in the country, at just below $102,000. Gilbert ranked fourth-highest, at around $94,000.”
It seemed people already knew what WalletHub said, as Gilbert had the third-highest number of families who have young children. However, it seemed word about Scottsdale had yet to make the rounds: The city had the lowest number of families with young children of any city on the list.
Gilbert did take a hit because it had some of the fewest playgrounds per capita, but it also had the second-lowest violent crime rate per capita and the third-lowest percentage of families living under the poverty line.
Other Phoenix-area cities also made the list: Chandler came in at No. 34 overall, while Peoria followed at No. 41.
The rest finished below spot 100.
