Excessive heat sweeps back into Phoenix area for most of week

PHOENIX — Summer heat in Arizona is hanging on as long as it can as temperatures climbed back well past the century mark.
An excessive heat watch was put into effect for most of the week, ending Thursday. The high Tuesday was expected to reach 111 degrees, eking past Monday’s 110 degrees.

Historically, the average temperature in Phoenix for late August is 104 degrees.
Clouds and precipitation were projected to move into the area Friday, but the temperatures will stay hot, staying in the 106-108 degrees range.
The state’s southwest desert could hit 115 degrees before the week is over.
Still, the heat will not match the hot-as-Venus weather of June, when Valley residents endured 11 straight days of at least 110 degrees and one day of 119 degrees.
The Arizona Department of Health Services recommended wearing lightweight clothing, drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous exercise and for anyone working outdoors to take regular breaks.
The Salvation Army planned to have 14 heat-relief stations across metro Phoenix for cooling and hydration.
