PHOENIX — Phoenix-area police were searching for a man who has called several people in Avondale pretending to be a police officer.
“He basically is not asking for any personal information, but is telling them they have a warrant out for their arrest, a traffic citation or other things they need to take care of,” Avondale Police Department officer Ray Emmett said.
The department said the caller will identify himself as Sgt. Jason Cook or Sgt. Chris Cook and tell people they should turn themselves in to police.
The department does not employ any officer by that name.
The caller typically hangs up when people push for more information.
Avondale police said anyone who gets a call claiming to be an officer should ask for their name and serial number. It also said it does not call people to notify them of a warrant.
Impersonating an officer is a felony in Arizona.
Anyone with information on the caller was asked to contact Avondale police at 623-333-7000 or the crime tip line at 623-333-7003.
