PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has requested disaster relief assistance to help those affected by wildfires and floods in Yavapai County.

A statement from the governor’s office said that Ducey sent a letter to the Small Business Administration, seeking a loan after Yavapai County was hit by monsoon flooding and the Goodwin Fire this summer.

“If approved, the assistance would allow residents to apply for small-interest loans through the SBA’s Disaster Loan Program in order to repair or rebuild damaged residences or businesses,” the statement read.

The Goodwin Fire scorched nearly 29,000 acres and prompted Ducey to declare a state of emergency as many residents of nearby towns — like Mayer and Dewey-Humboldt — were forced to evacuate.

“Many residents in Yavapai County and around the state continue to deal with the damage caused by wildfires, and face ongoing threats of flooding.” Ducey said via the statement. “This assistance request, if granted, will enable Yavapai County residents to apply directly to the SBA to help repair or rebuild damaged infrastructure.”

On Friday, personnel from various agencies estimated that the damage in Yavapai County totaled 14 homes destroyed, 22 homes with major damage, 84 homes with lesser damage and six businesses “that sustained economic injury.”
