PHOENIX — Two people were seriously injured Tuesday after small plane they were flying in crashed in the north part of Phoenix, officials said.

“We don’t know the extent of their injuries at this time,” Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Subveri said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed about a half-mile from from Deer Valley Airport, located near Seventh Street and Deer Valley Road, after it experienced mechanical issues

The pilot told the tower he planned to return to the airport but did not make it.

“We saw a plane really low, heading south and he started to wobble and it just came straight down,” a witness said.

The Phoenix Fire Department said the plane went through a fence and became lodged in a tree.

“It was scary to see,” another witness said.

Traffic was expected to be backed up in the area for hours. Drivers were urged to avoid the area if possible.
