PHOENIX — Celebrating the great outdoors can come at a cost.
The Outdoor Industry Association reports that consumers spend $21.2 billion annually for outdoor recreation in Arizona.
They also reported there are 201,000 direct jobs in the state thanks to outdoor recreation.
The state and local tax revenue alone is $1.4 billion per year, and $5.7 billion gets paid to employees.
The Outdoor Industry Association conducted their study on each state based on the Arizona Commerce Authority, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Computing Technology Industry Association.
They found 59 percent of Arizona residents participate in recreational activities outdoors each year, where they are more likely to go off-roading and day hiking than the average American.
Across the nation, $887 billion is spent annually by consumers on outdoor recreation, bringing in 7.6 million jobs and $59.2 billion in state and local tax revenue. Over $65 billion goes to federal tax revenue.
