San Francisco may be known as a the booming home of technological development and a place to find the best software engineering jobs in the United States. While it certainly has clout because of which companies call it home, it’s not necessarily the best when it comes to actually making money.
Codementor.com studied which big cities are the best for software engineers to make “real earnings,” and Phoenix ranked second on that list, just behind Seattle and far ahead of 19th-place San Francisco.
The website defined “real earnings” as income minus the total costs of taxes, social security, living costs and rent.
Seattle came in with a real earnings number of $45,182 before Phoenix ($37,573), San Jose ($33,859), Austin ($33,365) and Houston ($32,774) rounded out the top-five.
However, Phoenix is still new to the tech industry when it comes to size. It only has 5,100 job openings compared to 12,400 in Seattle and 20,100 in San Jose.
Of course, the Valley of the Sun scores well in “real earnings” because it scored among as the best U.S. city — along with Dallas — in the living costs category.
Phoenix also was tops in affordable rent as residents pay an estimated $972 per month.
