Sunday monsoon storms dump rain on East Valley

Jul 23, 2017, 6:38 PM | Updated: 8:45 pm

The National Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory for Maricopa and Pinal Counties as storms converged in the Phoenix metro area Sunday evening, dumping large amounts of rain on the East Valley.

A string of strong thunderstorms were tracked at dusk from Apache Junction south to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport near San Tan Village Mall.

The weather service said there was local flooding expected and warned against driving vehicles through flooded waterways or roadways.

A downpour in Queen Creek dropped more than an inch of rain, and more than two inches fell near the Usery Mountain Recreation Area just north of Apache Junction.

Among the more heavily populated areas, parts of Mesa near Falcon Field saw 0.83 inches, while several rain gauges in Tempe received 0.5 inches.

Flash flood watches were also in effect in Apache Junction, Cave Creek, New River, Fountain Hills, East Mesa, Globe and Miami as the storms converged around central Phoenix.

Winds upward of 40 mph accompanied heavy rain and blowing dust. The storm was mostly contained to the southeast Valley, including Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Ahwatukee, Queen Creek and Tempe.
