PHOENIX — The recent rainy activity will becoming to an end: A National Weather Service meteorologist said monsoon storm activity was expected to dry up next week.

“With humidities coming down and storm activity across the state starting to trend down, as early as Tuesday but starting for sure the middle of next week,” Austin Jamison said Friday.

Jamison said the expected slowdown is fairly typical for the average Arizona monsoon season.

“It’s very common to have this kind of waxing and waning of the storm activity where you’ll have an active phase and then a quiet phase and it kind of goes back and forth,” he said.

But that doesn’t mean a calm weekend was in store.

“We’ll still have an opportunity for storms over the metro (area) for at least the next few days,” he said. “Some days will be quiet and maybe there will be a day in there that’s pretty active.”

Storm chances varied over the weekend, with the best chances expected on Sunday and Monday nights.

Since June 15 — the official start of the monsoon season — the National Weather Service’s rain gauge at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has recorded about a half-inch of rain.
