PHOENIX — Heavy rains led to flooding in a central Arizona town that less than a month ago was evacuated because of a wildfire.
Monsoon storms have been pounding Arizona, dropping so much rain in and around Mayer that a creek overflowed and fences fell. Two people had to be rescued Wednesday after they were stranded by high water.
Flooding put another round of evacuation orders in place Wednesday afternoon but it was lifted by the evening.
A spokesman for the town’s water district said Thursday that residents should boil water for personal use for at least three minutes.
The American Red Cross said 17 people registered at a shelter at Mayer High School.
Last month, the Goodwin Fire forced residents to abandon their homes for days.
The fire consumed nearly 30,000 acres before it was contained.
Mayer is about 60 miles north of Phoenix.
