PHOENIX — A Nevada member of the Republican National Committee came under fire Monday after she retweeted a message about U.S. Sen John McCain (R-Ariz.) dying and added “amen.”
Diana Orrock tweeted, “Amen,” in response to another Twitter user who had written, “Please Just (expletive) Die Already” above the hashtag “JohnMcCain”.
Republican National Committee spokesman Ryan Mahoney called Orrock’s tweet “extremely inappropriate.” He called McCain a war hero who made countless sacrifices on behalf of all Americans.
Orrock deleted the tweet after it attracted media coverage. She did not respond to a voicemail or a text message seeking comment.
McCain, 80, was recuperating from surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye.
“The senator is resting comfortably at home and is in good condition,” a statement from his office read. “His Mayo Clinic doctors report that the surgery went ‘very well’ and he is in good spirits.”
McCain was expected to stay in Arizona for about a week to recover.
The Senate decided this weekend to delay a vote on its health care bill to give the longtime senator time to bounce back from the surgery.
President Donald Trump has said he hopes McCain makes a quick recovery. He called the senator a “crusty voice in Washington.”
